Sports!
Sports have been a huge part of Laura's life ever since she started playing softball, volleyball and football as soon as she could fight her way through her older cousins to earn a spot on the field.
Team sports and belonging
Few things represent the spirit of community better than a well-oiled sports team. And, on the flip side, few things represent patience, empathy and our shared humanity better than a team that’s a bit rusty.
Laura loves playing all sports, especially ones were she can be in charge and show off her arm strength. With her role as pitcher being the one she excelled at the most, she shifted to playing softball year-round in high school.
Something about the structure and rules that came with doing the same routine and drills every day clicked for Laura. It certainly helped that their team had turned into a group of best friends by high school. Laura challenged herself to 10 strikes in a row of the same pitch in the same corner of the batter box every night in high school. Nine perfect changeups in the bottom left outside corner followed by a dud in the middle? Push up time. (She’s since cut out the self-flagellation and has accepted that progress is better than perfection.)
Laura’s proud to support Upper Arlington sports and to recognize the important role that they play in cultivating a sense of community and feelings of belonging. Go Bears!
